Pirelli and BKT Sign Strategic Manufacturing Agreement in India, Paving the Way for a 50:50 Joint Venture

The partnership combines Italian technological expertise with Indian manufacturing capabilities, marking a significant development in bilateral industrial cooperation.

Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli and India's Balkrishna Industries Limited (BKT) have signed a strategic agreement to develop premium passenger-car tyre manufacturing in India, marking an important step in industrial cooperation between the two countries.
Announced on 22 October 2026, the partnership provides for the production of up to 800,000 Pirelli-branded premium car tyres by 2030, under an initial manufacturing arrangement with BKT.
The agreement also establishes a framework for a potential second phase involving the creation of a 50:50 joint venture and the construction of a dedicated manufacturing facility in India.
The development illustrates a model of bilateral economic integration that extends beyond conventional exports, combining technological capabilities, local manufacturing and long-term industrial partnerships.
A Two-Phase Industrial Partnership
The collaboration brings together two manufacturers with complementary capabilities.
Pirelli, founded in Milan in 1872, is internationally recognised for its high-performance and premium tyre technologies. BKT, established in 1987 and headquartered in Mumbai, has developed an extensive manufacturing and international distribution network, particularly in tyres for agricultural, construction, mining and other off-highway applications.
The first phase is based on an offtake agreement under which BKT will manufacture Pirelli-branded passenger-car tyres at its manufacturing operations in Bhuj, Gujarat.
Production will follow Pirelli's technological specifications and quality standards, enabling the Italian company to strengthen its presence in India through local manufacturing.
The companies have also entered into a separate technical-services agreement, under which Pirelli will provide testing and technical support for selected BKT-branded tyre products.
The second phase envisages the establishment of a jointly owned manufacturing company, with equal participation by Pirelli and BKT.
Subject to the fulfilment of agreed conditions and the execution of a definitive agreement, the proposed joint venture would develop a dedicated production facility for high-value passenger-car tyres under both brands, serving India and international markets.
The joint venture remains a proposed development, not an already established company or completed investment.
Strengthening India's Role in International Automotive Manufacturing
For Pirelli, which has so far maintained a commercial rather than a manufacturing presence in India, the agreement represents an opportunity to expand its participation in one of the world's major automotive markets.
The company will be able to combine its technological expertise and premium product positioning with BKT's local industrial capabilities and market knowledge.
For BKT, the partnership supports diversification beyond its established off-highway tyre business into passenger-car tyres, drawing on international technical expertise while developing its own product portfolio.
The companies have highlighted the expected expansion of India's automotive market, including anticipated annual growth of 5–7% in passenger-car registrations between 2025 and 2030 and a substantial increase in demand for premium tyres.
These projections provide a commercial rationale for the partnership, although its ultimate industrial and financial results will depend on implementation and market conditions.
From Market Access to Industrial Integration
The Pirelli–BKT partnership illustrates a development of increasing relevance to Italy–India economic relations: international market expansion through industrial collaboration rather than exports alone.
The agreement combines several elements that can contribute to stronger manufacturing ecosystems:
· Access to advanced product technologies and technical expertise.
· Local manufacturing and supply-chain capabilities.
· Product development, testing and quality assurance.
· Long-term commercial arrangements.
· Potential future investment through jointly owned production facilities.
Such arrangements can enable Italian companies to strengthen their presence in India while allowing Indian industrial partners to develop additional capabilities and participate in higher-value market segments.
The Perspective of the Italy–India Economic Observatory
The Italy–India Economic Observatory – Issue 0, launched by the Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IICCI) in September 2026, identifies manufacturing and industrial partnerships among the principal areas for strengthening bilateral economic relations.
The Observatory maps 1,057 Italian companies operating in India, demonstrating that the bilateral relationship is supported by an established business presence extending beyond trade flows.
Within its Automotive & Components analysis, the Observatory highlights opportunities for supplier development, joint engineering, production technologies and industrial partnerships between Italian and Indian manufacturers.
Its recommendations emphasise the importance of connecting specialised industrial capabilities with clearly identified production requirements, suitable local partners and sustainable implementation models.
The Pirelli–BKT agreement offers a relevant example of this approach.
Rather than relying exclusively on imported finished products, the partnership establishes a structured manufacturing relationship through which Italian technology and Indian industrial capabilities can be combined to address evolving market requirements.
Building Long-Term Industrial Partnerships
For IICCI, the significance of this development extends beyond the tyre industry.
The agreement illustrates how Italian and Indian businesses can develop complementary industrial partnerships, combining technology, manufacturing capabilities, quality standards and international market access.
It also reflects the broader direction identified by the Italy–India Economic Observatory: moving from commercial exchanges towards deeper industrial integration, supported by long-term cooperation and investment.
The next phase of Italy–India manufacturing relations will increasingly depend on the ability of companies to translate technological complementarity and market opportunities into sustainable industrial partnerships.
The Pirelli–BKT agreement represents a significant step in this direction, with its future evolution providing an important case to follow.
