India sees slight rise in Covid-19 cases, records 54,069 new infections, 1,321 deaths

India recorded 54,069 new coronavirus cases of Covid-19 and 1,321 deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to 3,00,82,778 on Thursday.



The active caseload in India dropped to 6.27 lakh while recovery rate improved to 96.61 per cent, according to the data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday morning.


More than 71 per cent of the new cases were reported from five states, with Kerala alone responsible for 23.65 per cent of the new cases.


The top five states which registered maximum Covid cases included Kerala with 12,787 cases, followed by Maharashtra with 10,066 cases, Tamil Nadu with 6,596 cases, Andhra Pradesh with 4,684 cases and Karnataka with 4,436 cases.


Maximum casualties, meanwhile, were reported in Maharashtra (508), followed by Tamil Nadu (166).



A total of 68,885 patients recovered in the last 24 hours, which took the total recoveries to 2,90,63,740 across the country, the updated data showed.


India administered a total of 64,89,599 doses in the last 24 hours, following which the total vaccination tally reached 30,16,26,028.


India had on Wednesday recorded less than 51,000 Covid-19 cases. On Tuesday, India recorded less than 50,000 daily cases -- the first time in 91 days.


Around 40 cases of the Delta Plus variant have been detected sporadically in Maharashtra, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh so far.



'Delta Plus' has been declared a variant of concern by the Centre. A person who was infected with the 'Delta Plus' variant of the coronavirus died in Madhya Pradesh on May 23.


“A woman died in Patidar Hospital due to coronavirus on May 23 after she tested positive for COVID-19. Her sample and that of 14 others were sent for genome report (sequencing) in a lab in Bhopal,” an official release said on Wednesday.
