India reports 38,792 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours

India today reported 38,792 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, data from the health ministry showed, with daily deaths rising by 624.

7,243 people tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours in Maharashtra, which has the highest number of cases in the country. The fresh cases pushed the tally of infections to over 61.72 lakh and 196 deaths took the death count to 1,26,220. After Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have the highest number of infections.


Meanwhile, the United States on Tuesday said that it is ready to ship its COVID-19 vaccines expeditiously when it has the green light from the Indian government which has told the Americans that it needs further time to review legal provisions related to accepting vaccine donations.


"We are ready to ship those vaccines expeditiously when we have a green light from the Government of India," State Department Spokesperson Ned Price told reporters at his daily news conference.
